“We can often miss the vanishings in life. We tend to favor new things, so that’s where our attention goes, and that’s what we’re training our attention to anticipate and LOOK for. In that process, we may even feel aversion to endings…” -Jessica Lipman

Jess!

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10+ years from when I began showing up to the Plangere Culture Lab in Rutgers University everyday for your support, guidance, and mentorship. 2009 goes down as one of the more impactful moments on the trajectory of my life.

I am grateful for how you empowered me through powerful questioning as I led myself into the local community. I learned to sew myself into the cultural fabric and met people building a life for themselves around who they are and what they believe.

I learned to listen. I learned to care. I learned to create value with my body, mind, and soul. I learned to serve from my heart. It didn’t always land well with others, and I made several decisions that made life harder. Slowly, I began to learn to carve out a place for myself in the new economy.

I learned to reconnect with my humanity through active and deep listening. I learned to cultivate a deeper sense of empathy and compassion. I learned to transmute these superpowers into the way my work makes another person feel.

I learned to sit in the discomfort of not-knowing. I learned how to follow an idea and bring it to life. I learned that it’s from deep within the space of nothingness will I feel my way through the ambiguity and get to the other side of uncertainty.

Somehow, 11 years ago, you knew there was a new toolbox I might need in this thing called life. I am grateful to have experienced the unfolding of the coming years to see how my working life would call those tools forth in unexpected ways.

Thank you for caring. Thank you for making a difference. Thank you for sharing your gifts. Thank you for all you do.

Daniel
