My experience in business creation is specifically around actualizing my purpose into the work I bring to the world. Starting the journey from my purpose means I stand for something more.

1. Actualizing purpose into business

When I start with purpose, I intrinsically grow a purpose-driven business that provides value and builds trust. It’s a higher truth that gives meaning and value to my brand. It’s magnetic effect attracts and unifies people around what I stand for. Intentionally cultivating a cohesive culture fosters growth individually and in relationships with clients, partners, and peers.

2. Permission to be great

Reflecting back on my journey, I spent a lot of time in “spectator” mode. I consumed content, saved the links in some random doc on my laptop or phone, and because it feels right to be learning it quickly becomes a never ending cycle. It’s easier to learn and pretend I was getting closer to purpose-driven financial freedom, when I was really just fiddling with myself.

It’s scary to put myself out there. There’s a risk associated with sticking my neck out, going against the grain, and carving out my own path.

“What if I don’t do it right? What if it’s not perfect? What will my family say? What if I fail? What if it hurts? What if I am not as smart as I think?”

If I asked myself anymore questions I never would have gotten anything accomplished. Instead, I thought,

“When is it my turn?”

I quickly answered,

“Now. It’s my turn right now.”

I stepped into my power when I decided to take a leap into the world. I gave myself permission to present my authentic self to the market. Let’s face it, a thriving business once started as an idea in a human being’s mind.

“Here I am. This is what I know. This is what I see. This is how I want to serve you.”

3. Business creation process

After building several businesses from scratch (with most of them failing) a process emerged. It brings clarity and helps me focus on smaller, specific projects related to the relevant phase.

Humanity (self): Reconnect with my humanity. Cultivate empathy, compassion, and a sense of self to create the conditions for healthy relationships with myself and others.

Community (people): Identify unmet needs. Sew myself into the cultural fabric of the community I hope to serve. Learn the habits, rituals and shared vocabulary. Build deep, meaningful and authentic connection.

Incubation (opportunity): Co-create value to serve unmet need. Get early buy-in from stakeholders by providing resources, putting them in a position to make decisions, and requesting them to lead.

Impact (growth): Simplify the business to maximize impact. Standardize processes with a playbook and technology. Adopt a low-risk way to test new ideas, and validate new business models for additional, predictable revenue streams.

The business creation process has helped me bring my work to New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and soon to be NYC as well. It’s a way of growing purpose-driven projects into profitable products at the grassroots level.
